Context

Nepal is rich in diverse natural resources, unique indigenous knowledge, and innovative human resources, which can be valuable sources of intellectual property (IP) for the country. However, there is a huge innovation and information gap in converting this tremendous potential into valuable IP assets. The country has so far focused on copyrights, trademarks, patents and design as its IP segments, which are only a small part of the larger IP framework. Nepal has not been able to fully utilize its IP system, both as a policy framework and implementable tool, to tap its rich resource endowments. Nepal’s IP system needs to be contextualized in keeping with the country’s needs, priorities, constraints and challenges arising from its comparative and competitive capability vis-à-vis its neighbors and other economic partners in and across the region. Concerted efforts and initiatives are needed among all concerned stakeholders to create, protect, promote and broaden the scope of IP rights and resources in the country. The establishment of IPPSON is a small-scale attempt to create a platform that serves this noble cause.
